The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presented the 31st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards for the creative arts on Saturday, May 15, 2003 in 43 categories during simultaneous black-tie ceremonies held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City and in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Highland.
Awards were presented in such categories as: Directing in a Talk Show; Casting Director for a Drama Series; Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design; Writing in a Children's series; Costume Design/Styling; Multiple Camera Editing; Music Direction and Composition; Direction in a Children's Special.
Emmy Awards are presented to daytime television programs that are broadcast nationally between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 p.m. The eligibility period for this year's Daytime Emmy Awards was January 1st, 2003 – December 31st, 2003.
"These creative craft awards recognize the true quality and professionalism seen in Daytime television today," said Peter O. Price, president of the National Television Academy. "We are thrilled to award such a distinguished and accomplished group of honorees at this year's 31st annual ceremony."
Unlike last year, when All My Children won seven Emmys en route to a record-setting eight wins in a single year, there was no clear-cut "winner" in this year's Creative Arts segment of the Emmys. In all, seven of the nine eligible soaps (Port Charles did not receive any technical nominations) walked away with at least one Emmy.
All My Children, As the World Turns, Passions and The Young and the Restless each picked up two wins. Only One Life to Live and Guiding Light were shut out in the technical categories.
All My Children's casting director Judy Blye Wilson earned her third consecutive Outstanding Achievement for a Casting Director for a Drama Series award. She has won the award every year since its inception in the 2002 Daytime Emmys. Winners are denoted in boldface type.
