The Internet may be one of the greatest inventions in the past 100 years. Stories, photographs and news can be transmitted around the world in the blink of an eye. Images from a disaster-strewn nation in the Indian Ocean were broadcast around the world as millions prayed silently for the welfare of strangers thousands of miles away. Never has the world been more connected than it is now.
But there is also a dark side to the Internet. For whatever reason, some people find joy in spreading malicious stories about actors or fellow Internet users. Perhaps it satisfies the morbid curiosity into celebrities' lives that so many people have. But it also can cause a great deal of pain.
While it is not usually Soap Central's policy to write a news story based on Internet gossip, this situation warrants addressing.
Recently, a wave of Internet postings claimed that One Life to Live co-stars Michael Easton (John McBain) and Melissa Archer (Natalie Buchanan) so disliked each other that the show's writing team had to limit their scenes together.
"[N]ormally I don't respond to these ramblings because they're so far off. Nothing I can say will put them straight," said Easton in a statement on his official web site. "For the record, Melissa Archer and Renee Goldsberry (Evangeline Williamson) are beautiful, talented, actors and I enjoy working with both of them immensely."
"As for the rumor that I'm now dictating storyline and have had sit down meetings with the writers to determine the outcome of the Natalie, Evangeline, John triangle. You got to be kidding me," Easton continued. "I have never met or even spoken to our head writer Dena Higley. Not once. Ever."
