With modern television audiences flocking to classic comedies like Golden Girls and Designing Women, daytime star Crystal Hunt (ex-Lizzie Spaulding, Guiding Light; ex-Stacy Morasco, One Life to Live) saw a major opportunity in the entertainment sphere. With those female-driven sitcoms in mind, the soap opera alum jumped at the chance to create a new series -- and that's how the hilarious new comedy Mood Swings was born.
The funny project -- which stars a bevy of daytime favorites -- focuses on Hunt as new divorcee Farrah, who is given a Malibu mansion as part of the divorce settlement from her rich, philandering husband Jonathan (Scott Bailey, ex-Sandy Foster, Guiding Light). With no previous work experience and minuscule financial support to take care of herself and the couple's eight-year-old son Ryder, Farrah isn't able to maintain the humongous mortgage payment that comes along with the mansion -- so she decides to rent out the bedrooms to keep the lights on.
The respondents to Farrah's Craigslist ad for female roommates are nothing short of a disaster: there's Coco (Robin Riker, ex-Naomi Dreyfus, General Hospital; ex-Beth Logan, The Bold and the Beautiful), a disgruntled working woman; Dani (Christina DeRosa), a Canadian-Italian "culinary wizard" and aspiring actress; and Emilia (Sophia Gasca), a Dominican entrepreneur trying to secure U.S. citizenship. Rounding out the cast is former Hannah Montana star Jason Earles as Angel, Farrah's live-in, slacker handyman, television legend Donna Mills (ex-Madeline Reeves, GH; ex-Abby Ewing, Dallas) as Farrah's mom "crazy Wanda," and Dyan Cannon as her aunt. As one can imagine, comedic hijinks ensue.
"We felt there was a need for a great female ensemble comedy," Hunt explains to EW of how the project came about. "Right now, you can only watch reruns of shows like Golden Girls and Designing Women to enjoy a female-driven show. Our thinking was to embrace the legacy of these programs while adding a modern twist."
Mood Swings is set to debut on Thursday, October 24, on the Christian streaming service Pure Flix, with new episodes being released every Thursday for a span of eight weeks.
